Things that Please Me

Music: To me, music is something that I can’t live without. Listening to music calms me down. Whenever I am angry, sad, or happy, I am always listening to music. Even as I am writing this, I am listening to music. If there were no music in life, it would be very dull. There are also so many different types of music: pop, rock, R&B, jazz, hip-pop, country, metal, alternative; so many different types to suit your mood. The thing that upsets me most about Korean music is that fact that albums aren’t being sold. People are saying it is the downfall of Korean music, and, unfortunately, I have to say I agree. Music is being downloaded for free on the internet. This has to stop for one primary reason – its illegal. Either way, music is music and all I have to say is that I love music.

Friends: What would I do without them? They are always there for me as I will always be there for them. There is one quote that I always liked: “A best friend is like a four-leaf clover – hard to find but lucky to have”. I guess I have always been lucky because I have so many good friends that I can count on. They make my life bearable. No matter how hard it may be sometimes, I can always talk to them. They listen to me and I listen to them. That’s what friends are for, isn’t it? It may be two in the morning or during lunch at school – we will always be talking. I never really remember what we talk about, but one thing is for certain. I always remember we were having a good time.

Family: I love my family. I love my Mom, Dad, and my brother. I can’t leave out Mary, our eight-year-old dog. They are the ones who know the most about me. They even know things that I don’t even know. I can always count on them. I know they love me and I love them, too. Even though I may make stupid mistakes sometimes, they are always there for me. They support me and look after me. They can always help me solve my problems. I sometimes think I made the right choice of not going to boarding school because I love being with my family. I won’t be living with my parents anymore when I graduate high school. I try to enjoy my time at home the most I can.

Sugar, candy, chocolate and all that good stuff: Need I say more?

SLEEPING: Sleep is something that I don’t get much of during the week. In addition to school and homework and tests, I have “hagwon” and I have to practice every night. During the weekends, I am always sleeping until 12 in the noon. I love to sleep. Sometimes it amazes me that I can still function without getting enough sleep.

Unavoidable Things

February 10th 2008

In life, there are just some things that we cannot avoid. No matter how hard we try or how bad we want to avoid them, they will always be there. Just waiting for us.

Students, for example, will never be able to avoid homework. It is something that we just have to learn to live with. Every day, weekends included, students have to do homework. Even during long weekends or vacations, homework is always included. If you think that you don’t have homework, think again, because you probably just forgot about it.

There are some things that
teachers can’t avoid as well. Teachers have to plan their classes, grade papers and tests, and think of projects to assign us.
Adults have to pay bills and taxes. Parents have to work in order to pay those bills and tuition fees for their children. They can’t not do these things because it is necessary in order to support their families.

One thing’s for certain - we will always be stuck with these duties. Need proof? I can name at least ten people at the top of my head who are struggling right now because they have to do what they have to do.

It’s a Wonderful World

February 9th 2008

Promise you’ll write me!

Promise you’ll call me!

Promise you’ll email me!

Promise you’ll skype me!

Over the years, the ways of contacting people have adapted to our changing environments and lifestyles. First it was writing letters to each other. Then emails and phone calls. But now, there is a whole new concept! Skype. Skype is an online program which allows people to make free phone calls online. It lets users video conference, send instant messages, and send files - all at once! How amazing is that? Who could have possibly thought of this 50 years ago? “Skype-ing” someone is much more convenient and it doesn’t cost a penny!

The advancements in technology are telling us something: people are capable of doing things that were not even imaginable back then. If you just try hard enough and have enough determination, nothing is impossible. Every day people all around the world are trying to make our lives as comfortable as possible. This explains how programs such and Skype or SHOW were made. SHOW is a program developed in Korea which is similar to Skype, but this works on cell phones. Korea has always been developed in cell phones. I guess it’s something to be proud of.

Our lives are just so comfortable. If we need something, we’ll most likely find it at a convenient store not even five minutes from our house. If we don’t know the definition of a word, we can use an online dictionary, or, even better, use a dictionary that is placed on our computer desktop. If we want to know something but are too embarrassed to ask someone personally, we can ask the question online and wait for people to answer it. This became so normal. When I ask my friends a question that they don’t know the answer to, they always say “ask Naver.” Naver is a Korean search engine. This became part of our lives.

These are just few of the many things that make our lives pleasant. Even the simple everyday things, such as internet, electricity, or even running water are things that we take for granted. My mom was walking past me the other day as I was shopping online and said “It’s a wonderful world, isn’t it?” I couldn’t agree more.
